Solar
Sustainability is very important to us at CASITA JOANA! We are proud to have our own photovoltaic system, which supplements our electricity supply. With this system, we produce clean and environmentally friendly electricity. During the day it covers almost our entire power consumption. At night and on cloudy days, we use a green tariff, as green electricity from renewable energies makes an important contribution to climate protection and saves up to 90 percent CO2!
We also rely on solar heat for hot water preparation. That’s why CASITA JOANA has a solar boiler, which saves energy so that no additional electricity is needed in the summer. 100% solar energy! But don’t worry, on cloudy days, the hot water boiler can also be heated via the fixed power connection. 😉
Water
To save water, we collect rainwater for garden irrigation and plant only drought-resistant plants that require little water. Our guests can decide for themselves how often they need fresh towels and bed linen. Unlike an automatic change, we save almost two-thirds of the towels and thus also two-thirds of the water. Each wash cycle with 10 kg of towels consumes at least 50 liters of water and 1.2 kilowatt hours of electricity. But not only the high water consumption is critical, conventional detergents also have a strong impact on the environment. Conventional detergents often contain petroleum-based surfactants, fragrances, and optical brighteners that pollute wastewater and harm our health. That’s why we use a 100% biodegradable organic product in powder form, as washing powder has less impact on the environment than liquid detergents.
Textiles
We focus on quality and avoid disposable products with our textiles. Our bed sheets are made of 100% organic cotton, which is not only better for our guests but also for the planet! Organic cotton is grown without pesticides and has 20% less nutrient input into the soil, 70% less impact on soil acidification, and 91% less water consumption compared to conventional cotton.
Cleaning Agents
Instead of using environmentally harmful cleaning agents, we rely on ecological alternatives without microplastics, non-biodegradable plasticizers, and synthetic surfactants, which are mostly derived from petroleum. Although surfactants must be biodegradable according to EU regulations, this only applies to surface degradation and not to end degradation. Petroleum surfactants are difficult to degrade and often cannot be filtered out by sewage treatment plants, allowing them to enter rivers and lakes and endanger aquatic life. Unlike chemical cleaners, ecological cleaning agents are biodegradable and have less harmful effects on the environment. They pollute wastewater less with pollutants and thus protect the environment and animals. We also make sure that the products are vegan and cruelty-free.
Animal Protection
Unfortunately, there are many free-roaming cats on Formentera that reproduce uncontrollably, leading to overpopulation. This is especially a problem for the animals themselves, as the food supply is insufficient and many diseases are transmitted during fights and mating. At Casita Joana, we are committed to the neutering of free-roaming cats. We take care of the cat population in the area by setting up a fixed feeding station and providing veterinary care for the animals. Shelters for the winter are also available.
